Cleansed

Cleaning cloth with household cleaners and layered fabrics, 40 X 30”, 2005

Inspiration for this assisted readymade came while cleaning my house. I noticed my dust cloth resembled paintings by Rothko. In this layered painting, I’m interested in fusing a modernist under painting with the automatism of a stained cleaning rag.

Cowboy Rhythm

Tobacco spit and oil on canvas, 32.5 X 40”, 2004

I composed this abstract expression, tongue pressed quid in cheek. On average I produced seven pigmented spits per chew ranging in seven values of rich brown to pale tan. The time necessary to generate each mouthful was spent contemplating the placement of my next gesture within the composition.

Kinetic Bas Relief

Flypaper and flies, 2004

A bas-relief sculpture that slowly gained mass (however minute) by chance encounter with house pests.

Malpighian Excretions

Red metabolic moth pigments, mixed mediums and layered fabrics, 43 X 30”, 2005

Noticing the strength of the red pigment in moth droppings, I conceived of this painting. From within my house, individual stains were cleaned with my finger wrapped in a cloth and dipped in water. I appreciated the variety of hues in this collection stretched and glued over an under painted canvas. Creating this work thoroughly cleaned my windows.

Sheer Retinal III

Stretched fabrics, 2005

This ongoing series of ‘paintings’ is informed by modernist color field painting, but these are small in scale since they are made from layers of stretched used clothing, curtains and other fabrics I have acquired in thrift stores. I am fascinated with the OPtical effects (moire patterns) resulting from multiple layers of fabric interacting below the surface. The appearance of this work varies when viewed from different angles. Although this series satisfies my criteria for working with unusual methods and materials, there is a danger of being too visually entertaining (Duchamp’s “retinal”).

Summer Finches

Bird excrement and enamel on canvas, 36 X27,” 2004

Created by an orchestrated interaction with summer finches to transfigure their droppings under a thistle seed feeder. I continue to notice these infinitely variable and readymade bird paintings everywhere.

Winter Finch Pointillism

Bird excrement and enamel on wood panel, 30 X30,” 2005

A continuation of Summer Finch concept but improved to better reflect the pattern of finch droppings I discovered under the thistle feeder. The gaps between panels and wood tone sections are interpretations of the wooden deck beneath the bird feeder.
